Since the approach of content-based instruction (CBI) has been widely applied in all kinds of learning contexts in thepast twenty years, there has been a great amount of discussions about its potential benefits for second language (L2) and foreign lan-guage (FL) learning. This paper reviews the literature as well as research about CBI, focusing on its development and characteris-tics. Pedagogical implications for classroom teachers to achieve the balance between language instructions and content teaching areexplored as well.
