Currently,"carbon peaking"and"carbon neutrality"are serious challenges for our country at this stage. The role of the digital economy in reducing carbon emissions is an issue that needs to be explored. However, there is a lack of empirical research on the digital economy and carbon emissions. In view of this,an empirical study is conducted on the impact of digital economy development on regional carbon emission intensity by using inter-provincial panel data. The results show that the development of the digital economy can significantly reduce regional carbon emission intensity, and this finding still holds after a series of robustness tests. There is heterogeneity in the impact of the digital economy on carbon emission intensity.Specifically, the carbon reduction effect of the digital economy is more pronounced in the central and western regions and in regions with higher carbon emission intensity.
